Theorising the Psychic Awakening

Not too long ago, Games Workshop kicked off their most recent galaxy-spanning story arc in the form of the Psychic Awakening. Pulling in all the current races, this collection of campaign books aims to move the Warhammer 40,000 story towards its next big chapter. The first book, Phoenix Rising, focused on the Aeldari (all flavours) telling of how the opening of the Great Rift has affected this once great race and continues the story of Yvraine’s ongoing quest to fully awaken Ynnead.

The second book, Faith & Fury, will turn the spotlight on the Imperium of Man’s most devout defenders as they do battle with the traitorous legions of the Heretic Astartes, with new rules for the Black Templars, Night Lords, Alpha Legion, World Eaters, Emperor’s Children, Iron Warriors, and Word Bearers.

Now while the chapters in this ongoing epic are great, many players are wondering what will be coming next. After all, Games Workshop has promised that ALL playable factions will be featured in this series of books at some point, so its only understandable that fans of those races yet to be covered are keen to see what is coming down the pipeline.

Well today I thought it would be fun to speculate on one of the possible adventures that could be awaiting us in the near future. Will I be right? Will I be wrong? Who knows? The main point is to start the conversation and have some fun while we wait for the next book in the series. So, without further ado, let’s start speculating.

Return to Armageddon

Since the cataclysmic event known as the Great Rift, Armageddon has seen many changes. At the height of the Warp Storms that tore the galaxy in two, the daemonic forces of Tzeentch and Khorne descended upon the hive world and began to battle each other as part of their eternal competition in the Great Game.

By the time the beacon of the Astronomican was once more alight and Imperial reinforcements made it to the planet, half the planet had been reshaped into a hellish landscape reminiscent of a Daemon World. Led by Salamanders, nine Space Marine Chapters battled with the demonic hoards, even succeeding in halting a daemonic ritual that would have brought Angron, the Primarch of the World Eaters into this reality.

So, we have a world that has Daemons, Orks and Imperial forces battling for the fate of a world vital to the Imperium’s ongoing war effort. How can this not be a chapter in the Psychic Awakening campaign.

We could see Commissar Yarrick leading a resistance of the final few Guardsman on the planet, court between the savage assault of the Orks and the creatures of the wrap. The citizens of Hades Hive bunkered down as monstrous Daemon engines besiege the last baston of humanity on the planet.

Ghazghkull Thraka, seeing only more opportunity to fight even more foes in the form of the servents of Chaos, could have grown larger thanks to the never-ending battle. He could even receive a new model representing him after battling Daemon for the last few years, maybe even making him as big as the ancient Beasts of old.

And at the heart of it all, a ritual to summon Angron that despite everyone’s best attempts, actually succeeds. The lord of the World Eaters then aims to crave out a bloody path of destruction, ripping apart all other forces on the planet. Just then, when all hope seems lost and the it appears that Armageddon will fall, a blinding light fills the battlefield and the Grey Knight arrive to do battle with the Daemonic Primarch once more.

This would be the greatest time to revamp the Grey Knights change them from the laughingstock of the tournament scene into a powerhouse of a faction. New characters, revisited heroes and most importantly, Primaris reinforcements. These reforged battle brothers would then turn the tide and put an end to Angrons rampage, for now at least.

With so much to cover I find it hard to believe that Games Workshop wouldn’t have Armageddon as a focus for one of the Psychic Awakening campaign books. Time will tell if we do go back to this war-torn hive world, but I for one am hopeful we will.
