Make it Rain

On Monday, our very own Abbie cracked into a couple of Treasure Chests. These nine card promotional boosters are available to anyone who purchases any booster box at their local game store (while stocks last). During the video, which you can check out here, Abbie cracked a foil promo Treasure Map. While she was admiring this foil gem, Abbie said it would be a shame not to make use of it and that ‘we’ would try to write up a deck tech for today. As Abbie is technically our boss she made use of that classic managerial tactic, delegation. And as resident ‘deck tech goblin’, guess who ended you taking on that challenge?

Now to be fair I don’t really mind. I love brewing decks, and I had been working on something a little different for a while that actually made use of this nifty Artifact. What’s more, it wouldn’t be an aggro deck (I know, I was surprised too). So, sit back and enjoy todays deck tech I like to call, Make it Rain.

The deck is a control build with an alternative win condition, it the form of Revel in Riches. The idea is simple. Kill all our opponents Creatures while stacking up a whole ton of Treasure Tokens. We mainly generate Treasure by destroying our opponents Creatures, so a healthy supply of removal spells is a must. A playset of Fatal Push is a good place to start, and we back them up with two copies of Never//Return. But were not happy with creating one or two Tokens at a time, we want to ‘Make it Rain’. To that effect, Bontu’s Last Reckoning and Fumigate are great ways to sweep the board and gain use a ton of Treasure.

While destroying Creatures might be fun, sometimes we don’t want to let our opponents threat hit the board. Counter spells like Metallic Rebuke and Spell Swindle make great additions to our deck, either making use of our plethora or Artifacts, or adding to our collection. A playset of Pirate’s Prize helps us keep our hands full if answers, and three copies of Treasure Map (one of which can be a promo if you like) will keep the top of our deck live. I also love the idea of paying very little for my spells, and Inspiring Statuary allows us to cheapen the cost of many of our more expensive spells.

Our plan is solid, but what happens if we can’t find our Revel in Riches, or if our opponent resolves a Lost legacy. Well not been one to put all my eggs in one basket I have that covered. Two copies of Mechanized Production can provide an even easier way for us to win the game, and Tezzeret the Schemer if allowed to ultimate can take over the game in our deck. The finally addition to the deck is a full playset of Anointed Procession to double any Tokens we generate.

The mana base is a fairly standard affair for a three-colour deck. Glacial Fortress and Drowned Catacomb work very well with Irrigated Farmland and Fetid Pools to provide untapped mana when we need it. Concealed Courtyard gives us access to more white sources for our Anointed Procession and Fumigate. Since we are going to have a ton of Artifacts laying around Spire of Industry will help us fix our mana. Lastly, Field of Ruin will work triple duty destroying our opponents multi-colour lands, fetching our Islands and Swamps and triggering Revolt on our Fatal Pushs. It’s also worth remembering that Treasure Tokens also fix our mana, but we don’t want to use too many as they are better used as our win-con.

Lost Legacy is a sure-fire way of getting rid of any threats we defiantly don’t want to resolve, and finally a playset of Contraband Kingpin to give us staying power against decks like Ramunap Red.

And there you have it, a fun but surprisingly effective deck for your next FNM. But what do you think? Is this a deck you are interested in trying for yourself? What would you differently?
