A couple of weeks ago I was spending the evening playing some MTGO, trying out a couple of budget modern decks for future articles. One of the things I love about MTGO, apart from the ability to game when I like, is that you get to see people trying out super sweet homebrews that you yourself would never have come up with. It was during this session of online gaming that a came across today’s deck, and I wanted to shine a spotlight on it as I think it was pretty sweet.
The creator of the deck Forrest Taylor, or sololobo2015 as he is known in the digital world, was more than happy to share the deck with me when we got chatting during the game. He calls his creation “Gobots”, and in his own words the “list is a blend of Robots and Goblins”. Now some people have already included creatures like Signal Pest and Memnite in 8 Whack decks for a while now, to help generate super explosive starts in the early game. However, Forrest took the deck one step further with his own spicy picks.
The traditional goblin package of Reckless Bushwhacker, Goblin Bushwhacker, Goblin Guide and Legion Loyalist will be familiar to anyone whom has had experience with 8 Whack. They have paired up the classic Affinity creatures in the form of Signal Pest, Memnite and Ornithopter, which allows the deck to play out an obscene number of creatures in the first few turns of the game. Forrest also included full playsets of Bomat Courier and Burning-Tree Emissary, both of which make great additions to the deck. A new member to the robot family, Bomat Courier makes a great turn one play as it has the potential to refill your hand at a moment’s notice thanks to its activated ability. Burning-Tree Emissary is another creature for decks that want to empty their hands asap, especially when one of the cards in hand is a Reckless Bushwhacker.
The only non-creature cards in the mainboard are a playset of Mox Opal and four copies of Kuldotha Rebirth. The mox’s provides some great acceleration if you can get down a couple of robots on turn one, while the rebirth can be used to convert a single Ornithopter or extra mox into three additional goblins. The deck only runs sixteen lands, including playsets of Copperline Gorge, Wooded Foothills and Stomping Ground, as well as four basic Mountains.

The deck is, in the words of its creator, a bit of a glass cannon. But it is capable of some insanely explosive starts with the right hand. If you are lucky enough to get the magical Christmas hand you will be looking at doing upwards of twelve damage before your opponent has a chance to react, which I think we can all agree is pretty good in anyone’s book.
